FISIOSENIOR: for a longer life

The progressive aging of the population is now a clear fact both globally and nationally. As a matter of fact, in Italy, the population aging in the last 50 years has been one of the fastest among the most developed countries, and it is estimated that in 2050 the SENIOR population will reach 35. 9% of the country’s total population. Why FISIOSENIOR?

Given this data, it is important, therefore, to state that the health status of the senior patient must be identified with the maintenance of psychophysical and relational well-being, even in the presence of pathology. It will, consequently, be crucial for physiotherapy centers and physiotherapists to equip themselves with appropriate tools and skills to meet this growing need.

What are the most frequent pathologies?

  • SARCOPENIA: is the progressive loss of muscle mass and has a greater prevalence in men (M.S.). This condition has a major impact on motor skills and is associated with an increased risk of falls and, therefore, fractures.
  • ARTHRITIS AND ARTHROSIS: rheumatic conditions characterized by pain accompanied by stiffness and limitation in movement. Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of autoimmune origin. Arthrosis or osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is not an inflammatory disease but a chronic degenerative form and is related to the wear and tear of joints.
  • TENDINOPATHY: this includes both tendinitis, which is the acute inflammatory process in tendons, and tendinosis, which is the chronic inflammation and degeneration of collagen. The risk of developing tendinopathy is closely linked to slow degeneration of the tissues, which over time can reduce their elasticity, weaken, and become injured.
  • POST PROSTHETICS: According to data from SIOT (Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology), more than 200,000 prostheses are implanted each year in Italy, including more than 100,000 of the hip, just over 85,000 of the knee and about 15,000 of the shoulder, elbow, and ankle prostheses. With record increases over the past 15 years: +141% for hip and 226% for knee. The average age of patients ranges from 66 to 72.4 years. Essential for a fully functional return is appropriate post-surgical rehabilitation to accompany the various stages of recovery.
  • OSTEOPOROSIS: It has a huge negative impact on physical and psycho-emotional well-being and increases the risk of fractures from falls, bumps, or spontaneous fractures. Typical “bone fragility fractures” are extremely common in the over-65s, and it is estimated that osteoporosis affects about 5,000,000 people in Italy, 80% of whom are postmenopausal women.

PREVENTION

It includes the tools for functional training and specific physical means for improving biological tissues. Maintaining a good level of fitness through targeted exercises, proprioception training, and stimulation of the circulatory system is essential to prevent physical decay.

Devices:

  • Evergy products: for functional training, composable and adaptable to the needs;
  • T Care Compact: to treat localized edema post-surgery, drain any lymphatic stasis, and stimulate the natural reparative and anti-inflammatory processes of the musculoskeletal system;
  • Libra: electronic balance board for functional rehabilitation after trauma and in numerous hip, knee, and ankle conditions;
  • Minivector: elastic band device for early active reeducation, ideal for proper progression of loads;
  • Pressotherapy: to activate venous, arterial, and lymphatic circulation applied to peripheral areas of the body where congestion and fluid stasis may occur.

MOBILITY

This set aims to control inflammation, and pain and restore functionality. Physical exercise, either alone or, even better, in combination with specific medical devices, is the currently recommended approach to keep the body and mind active or restored after surgery.

Devices:

  • Vscan echograph: to evaluate the state of muscle recovery and the effectiveness of physical exercises performed in conjunction with the right technologies;
  • Cryo T: for fast and safe cold treatment;
  • Cyclette: to perform physical activity in a cardiovascular manner without significantly impacting the joints;
  • Vector: allows early work on injured limbs without stressing them with body weight;
  • Delta: for a deep, homogeneous, and controlled hyperthermic stimulus that induces an antalgic and anti-inflammatory effect;
  • T Care Plus: for endogenous stimulation, which acts on biological tissues noninvasively, activating from the inside and amplifying natural reparative and regenerative processes.

RECOVERY

It is addressed to senior patients, who often have a heterogeneous clinical situation. Knowing how to integrate different methods through effective clinical reasoning and the possibility of having multiple tools is of great practical help to the practitioner who starts a path together with the senior patient.

Devices:

  • Versana echograph: to evaluate the muscular recovery progression and the effectiveness of the physical exercises realized with the right technologies;
  • Focal and radial shock waves: to treat tendinitis, muscles, and trigger points, with a regenerating action and the possibility to manage the modulation of nerve branches;
  • emField Pro: to reach muscle strengthening and pain modulation, which acts on the normalization of the nervous system conduction;
  • Ultrasound: for chronic inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system;
  • Isokinetic: to safely evaluate the strength and the resistance of moving muscle groups;
  • Treatment tables: they allow any therapy, examination, and manipulation.
